Chronic Stomach Discomfort?

Today I feel like writing a little bit about someone's personal experience with a raw-vegan diet.

For many years, my girlfriend (not the guy in the picture!) experienced terrible digestive problems.  She had painful acid reflux on a nearly daily basis since she was 12 years old.  Often it was so bad that she'd stay home from school for up to a week. 

She tried to do something about it, making various changes to her diet, but could never fix the problem.  Because the household ate a lot of the usual Western stuff -- red meat, fried potatoes, bread, coffee, and soda pop -- she was starting from a difficult position. 

Looking back now, it's pretty obvious why there were problems.

  • Virtually the entire diet was acid-forming foods (meat, pop, bread, coffee...)
  • Too much heavy, hard to digest food (meat, proteins and fats, bread...)
  • Poor food combining (heavy proteins + starches + sugars + fat = major indigestion)

But at the time, it's not obvious at all.  When everyone you know eats that way and you don't know any differently, the answer can be hard to find.  When you've never seen anything else, how do you know it exists?

Making little changes to your diet (even if they seem big at the time) is not going to take you very far.  Dropping red meat for chicken or adding more greens is not the answer to the problem. 

Adding a little good stuff won't do it.  You need to eliminate the bad stuff first.  What she needed was a total dietary overhaul

Over the last year, she's picked up a lot of my eating habits and is feeling a lot better.  She eats a lot more fruits and vegetables, has smoothies on a regular basis, and barely eats any meat and bread or drinks any pop anymore.  (She's still working on the coffee...)

She's not totally raw, and she may never choose to to take it as far as that, but she's feeling a lot better because she embraced the idea and made big changes to her diet.

It's normal to be uncertain when something is totally different from your comfort zone.
She was very skeptical about going raw.  So was I when I first heard about it. 

But when the results speak for themselves, everything changes!

If you're experiencing stomach pains or digestive problems, or just a general feeling of unwellness in general, you owe it to yourself. Give a raw-vegan diet, loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables, a try.

You just might be pleasantly surprised at what you discover. :-)

One of the reasons I am going raw is because I have struggled with major stomach issues my entire life. I find myself unable to travel because I have to make uncomfortable stops along the way due to intense pain and discomfort. I am hoping after the initial detox period some of my problems solve themselves because after all of my research I have done I have seen animal products as a big reason why people have so many problems (along with fried food, white food etc)
