New Release! "Busy Person's Guide to the Raw-Vegan Diet"

I can hardly believe it but today's that day.  The day I can finally say that my book is complete.

It hasn't really sunk in yet.  I've spent so long feeling like I'll never get this thing done.  Now that I have it seems so weird.

But there it is!  Just wander over to my products page and it's right there where I left it.

I'm really excited about getting this thing out there for you.  I know it's exactly the book that anyone new to the raw diet needs.

That's why I wrote it.  It's the book I wish I had five years ago.

It covers everything you need to know, straight from beginning to end.

You can go in knowing nothing at all about the raw diet, and you'll come out not only having been taught everything you need to know, but also possessing a clear plan of exactly what to do.

You know, I have to apologize...

What I wanted to have ready for you today was a full breakdown of what you'll discover in my new book.  But I've been so busy getting it finished that I haven't been able to do that for you yet.

(To be honest, my mind is so burned out from writing for weeks on end that I can barely string this blog post together.)

It looks like that's going to have to wait until Friday morning's post instead.  In the meantime, I think I've actually got a better idea.

I want to make the first 20 pages of the book available to you for free.  That way you can get a feel for the book before you buy it.  You'll be able to see the full table of contents and read the first few chapters.

I'm just about to head back to campus for an evening accounting class right now, but I think I'll be able to get that out to you tonight.

When it's on my site, I'll send out another short blog post to give you the link.

Talk to you soon.

Get Ready for Raw Success! Your Total Raw Diet Resource is Only Two Days Away!

In my last blog post we talked about times of change, and taking advantage of them when they arise.

You may even have acted on my suggestion and made a raw resolution for yourself.  If you didn't, that's okay.  The chance hasn't passed you by.  You can start today, instead.  :^)

I know it can be tough to start new things... especially on your own.  That's why I always want you to remember that I'm here to help.

My site, Real-World Raw Health and Nutrition, is all about giving you the information you need to achieve excellent health with your raw-vegan diet

At this point you're already familiar with my blog and newsletter.  I hope you find them to be great sources of tips, tricks, inspiration, and all-around raw advice.  (Remember, I write those to help YOU, so if there are any topics you'd like me to discuss, feel free to email me or post a comment anytime.)

As important as my blog and newsletter are to me, there's something else that's been eating up my time, lately.  I've been working behind the scenes on finishing the final chapters of my book,
"Real-World Raw: The Busy Person's Guide to the Raw-Vegan Diet"

I've mentioned a little bit about it, but for the most part haven't let too many details slip.  For those of you who've gotten curious, good news!  You won't have to wait much longer.  I've set a hard release date of September 16th, 2009.  (That's just two days away!)

My next blog post is going to be the methaphorical cutting of the ribbon.  At that point my book will be uploaded to my site and available for you to purchase.  I'll give you a detailed scoop on exactly what you can expect to find inside.  Believe me, there's tons of content here.

As of this moment, if I made no further changes the book would be 270 pages.  Don't be surprised if I add a couple more tonight and tomorrow, though.  There's just so much to say!

That's part of why I've made this release date absolutely firm.  It forces me to stop being such a perfectionist and just get the thing done.  After all, I've been working on it for two years.

Admittedly I'm biased, but I'm really excited about this book.  It offers a whole new dynamic to what I can teach you.  The blog and newsletter are great, but they have their limitations.  They can only touch the surface of the issues.  With my book, however, I can delve much deeper.

The foundations of everything I've experienced with the raw-vegan diet is contained in this book.  By reading it you'll learn everything you need to know to succeed on your raw-vegan diet.

You'll gain a total understanding of what the raw-vegan diet really is and how it benefits your body in countless ways.

Everything we talk about on the blog and in the newsletters will become so much more meaningful to you because of a deeper understanding.

Most importantly, you'll have a crystal clear path layed out before you, ready to take you from where you are now to where you want to be.

I really can't possibly recommend this book enough.  If you want to experience the amazing health that comes with living the one truly natural diet, this book will be exactly what you need

That's why I wrote it.  It's the precisely the book I wish I had five years ago.

I hope that it can be the perfect book for you, as well.

Change is a process.  The biggest step is always the first one — the one that gets things started.  It just gets easier from there.

Your biggest step can begin on Wednesday.  Take your first step.

Check out my book and we can embark together on your journey to incredible raw health.

I'll see you on Wednesday.  :^)

Should I Use Dried Fruit on My Raw-Vegan Diet?

In anticipation of my soon-to-be-released book, "Real-World Raw: The Busy Person's Guide to the Raw-Vegan Diet", I've decided to toss another little sneak peek onto the blog.

The following is a snippet from the book, addressing the question of whether to include dried fruit in your raw diet.

Hope you find it useful!

When I first started going raw-vegan I didn’t really have a good understanding of what I was doing.  Not surprisingly, I made a lot of mistakes that had the entirely awesome consequence of making me feel not-so-great.

One of those mistakes was eating a lot of dried fruit

Now, having the benefit of a nice pair of retro-spectacles and 20/20 hindsight, I can recommend that you not do the same thing yourself

Simply put, dried fruit is the raw-foodist’s junk food.  It shares several of the same problems that we typically associate with cooked foods.

The first problem is that it’s very concentrated. One of the many upsides to fresh, raw fruit is that it’s moist and very easy to digest.  Dried fruit, on the other hand, is very dense and difficult to digest.  This means that eating dried fruit in volume leads to indigestion and gas.

The second problem with dried fruit is that it dehydrates you.  When you eat it, your body has to provide its own water to rehydrate it before it can be digested.  This water drain often leads to feelings of sluggishness and fatigue

If that’s not enough, dried fruit is a dental disaster waiting to happen.  When we eat fresh fruit, the natural sugars are washed away quite easily by the water content.  However, when we eat dried fruit, the sugars stay stuck to our teeth, feeding the bacteria in our mouths that cause dental decay.

So, am I saying that you shouldn’t eat any dried fruit at all?  Well, you’d certainly be able to get by just fine without it, but no, I’m not saying that.  While dried fruit isn’t nearly as good as fresh, it’s still better than most cooked foods.

What you should do, however, is limit how much dried fruit you eat.  Keep it to no more than half a cup per day.  Dried fruit shouldn’t be the main part of any meal — just a small snack.  It’s also generally a good idea to pre-soak your dried fruit to add back some of the moisture.  This makes it much easier to digest and is particularly useful on tougher things like dried figs.  Just submerge them in a small bowl of water and let them sit overnight.

One exception to these limitations is dates.  Unlike other dried fruit, dates are naturally dehydrated right on the plant.  They retain a fair bit of their moisture and are quite easy to digest, so you don’t have to limit yourself to such small quantities.  A cup or two of dates shouldn’t cause you any problems, as long as you pay attention to basic food combining.

Even so, I don’t recommend you get in the habit of making dates, or any other dried fruit a significant part of your regular diet.  They’re no replacement for fresh, raw fruits and vegetables, and you won’t experience the benefits of a raw-vegan diet if you’re relying heavily on dried fruit.  So long as you remember to keep them playing a supporting role, dried fruit can certainly be a part of your raw-vegan diet, but just remember to give the lead to the fresh fruits and vegetables.

Surround Yourself with People Who are Inspired, and Who Inspire You

"You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." -Jim Rohn

The people you surround yourself with have an effect on how you behave and who you become.  We're social creatures, and our friends, families and peers have a bigger influence on our actions and outlooks than we often realize or care to admit.  And it's our immediate circle, the handful of people we spend the most time with, that have the greatest effect of all.

If you want to succeed with your raw-vegan diet, who you surround yourself with is very important.  The last thing you want to do is put yourself in a position where you feel like you’re totally on your own — or even worse, alone and set against everyone else.  That would be a recipe for near-certain failure, and you’d have to be incredibly motivated to overcome such a handicap.  A much better scenario is to surround yourself with positive people who support your decisions and encourage you to succeed in achieving your goals.  If people are going to rub off on you, it's best if they're the sort of people who lift you up, not bring you down.

Surround yourself with a network of friends and family who are supportive, and happy for you that you’re doing your best to improve your health.  If you do that, you’ve got yourself a recipe for success!

Automated Indoor Compost Machine

Living on a piece of property with a fairly big yard, I've never really had much trouble dealing with my compost.  Sure I go through a ton of cores, rinds and peels, but with a bunch of large composting units out back, there's always been somewhere to put it.  For those out there who live in apartments or condos, composting might be a bigger hassle.  The idea of indoor composting doesn't sound too appealing.  That's just common sense, right?

The other day I stumbled across an interesting website.  After watching a short video clip, I started to wonder if indoor composting might be a viable option after all.  The video is quick -- only about 2 minutes long.  Take a peek for yourself if you're interested.

To be clear, I'm not reviewing NatureMill's product.  I've never seen one in person and certainly haven't experienced using one.  The idea does seem intriguing, however.  As the video mentions, food wastes constitute a huge portion of today's landfill waste and this can certainly be avoided. It would sure be nice to eventually have some form of urban composting become the norm.

Here's a link to NatureMill's site if you want to follow up further:  http://www.naturemill.com/
